Advanced ultrasound techniques help Danish physicians assess patients with suspected lung cancer and perform biopsies with even greater precision than before.
Prof Christian Laursen, MD PhD is a resident at the Department of Respiratory Medicine at Odense University Hospital and Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Southern Denmark.
Physicians at the Department of Respiratory Medicine at Odense University Hospital (OUH) in Denmark now perform lung cancer biopsies at an outpatient clinic using advanced ultrasound techniques. The department started performing ultrasound-guided biopsies as part of routine exams for patients with suspected lung cancer in 2012. With the addition of a new scanner in 2015, physicians at the outpatient clinic now employ a range of new advanced examinations.
For Prof Laursen using the ultrasound scanner and the advanced techniques, allow them to obtain biopsies of viable malignant cells, by giving us a way of distinguishing between normal, malignant and necrotic tissue using ultrasound.”
