Professor Lene Terslev, PhD is a Consultant in Rheumatology & Head of Ultrasound Division in Glostrup Hospital, Denmark. In this video, Lene demonstrates how to perform ultrasound scanning of salivary glands.
In this video, Lene Terslev, PhD first takes us through how to identify the salivary gland by using two major muscle landmarks; digastric and the mylohyoid muscles. From this you will be able to identify the three major salivary glands.
The parotid gland is located near the ear, the submandibularis gland is located under the mandibulae bone and finally, the sublingualis gland is located under the tongue. When conducting ultrasound scanning, the parotid gland and the submandibularis gland are favoured to use to diagnose any Salivary Gland Diseases. This is because the the sublingual gland is very small and therefore makes it quite difficult to identify and assess changes.
Lene Terslev continues to explain how to assess the parotid gland, positioning of the ultrasound probe what angles to use, how to assess the gland and what you should be looking out for.
